The Guardian newspaper has today printed an article about GSTS Pathology which is misleading, inaccurate and which contains assertions which are unsupported by any evidence.

The GSTS joint venture is not owned by Serco, it is in fact majority owned by the NHS. It has three committed partners who support the progress being made. GSTS is now trading profitably and is on track to break even this financial year. Modernisation of pathology is a national priority and GSTS exists to support the NHS in achieving that.

The pathology service provided by GSTS compares favourably with any pathology service in the NHS and patient safety and the quality of our service are our foremost priorities. There is no evidence to support the Guardian’s claim that the creation of GSTS as a joint venture between Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital foundation trusts and Serco, led to any of these incidents happening. The incidents listed in the article are the sort that happen in all pathology services and which GSTS has a good record of reducing year on year.

Sir Ron Kerr, Chief Executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust said, “We established GSTS to bring much needed modernisation to NHS pathology services. GSTS is majority owned by the NHS and represents the sort of partnership that will be essential for the future.”

Regulation of phlebotomists vary by state, but credentials usually require completion of a formal program and the passing of an exam. While these free courses may overlap with information found in site-based phlebotomy courses, they do not prepare learners to work as phlebotomists.

Online phlebotomy courses and materials implement various learning tools, such as quizzes, readings, lecture notes, performance keys and videos to help learners absorb content. Software programs to open some of the media files, such as a video player, may be needed.
